Natural and artificial selection remains the most important practice to develop high-yielding varieties. Several different breeding methods (more than 40) have been developed and used to improve the crops. Equal priority should be given to develop site-specific varieties with a broad genetic base for several crop species. Many countries therefore now have strategies to minimize genetic erosion and diversify their food and nutrition systems. Genetic diversity is most for better designing the genotype, however, due to focus only on a few crop species and adopting widely adopted varieties across the world, many landraces have been lost. Among the three approaches (area expansion, management and genetic improvement) to increase food production, genetic improvement is the best approach. Along with the advances in agriculture, particularly, genetic manipulation, there is a hope to achieve food, nutrition and environmental security worldwide. The world’s food production must increase by 70% in 2050 to feed a projected extra 2.3 billion people. The global mission is to secure food, nutrition and the environment.
